The Export Money Still Runs Through Trap.

Buenos Aires is now the cumbia capital of the world. Spotify says seven in ten of its users in the city listen to the genre, and no other metro on the platform streams more of it. That is not nostalgia. It is the sound of Argentina’s biggest domestic market moving away from the artists who put the country on the global map.

Cumbia streams in Argentina are up 237% since 2020, according to Spotify’s November 2025 report. Reggaeton grew 79% in the same window. Bachata grew 155%. Cumbia beat all of them, and it did it almost entirely at home.

Two music economies, one country

Argentina runs on two parallel scenes, and the money moves in opposite directions.

The domestic engine is cumbia. Ke Personajes became the first cumbia act to top Argentina’s most-streamed artist list in 2023. L-Gante, La Joaqui, DJ Tao, and Cazzu now blend cumbia with trap and RKT. RKT means a fast, DJ-driven fusion of reggaeton and cumbia villera born in the Buenos Aires suburbs. These streams are overwhelmingly Argentine.

The export engine is trap and reggaeton. Bizarrap’s BZRP Music Sessions, built in a Buenos Aires bedroom, became one of the most-streamed formats in Spotify history. Duki, Maria Becerra, Trueno, and Nicki Nicole tour Europe and the United States. Their royalties arrive from listeners who will never set foot in Argentina.

The problem is where each one gets paid

CAPIF is the Camara Argentina de Productores de Fonogramas y Videogramas, the country’s recording industry body. Its 2025 report, covered by Billboard, found streaming now drives 79% of recorded music revenue, with paid subscription alone at 65% of the digital take.

But the report also logged a decline in 2024, the first since the post-pandemic recovery. Two reasons stand out.

Subscription prices in pesos have not kept pace with inflation, so at constant value each stream pays less than it did.

Decree 765/24, published in August 2024, changed Argentina’s rules on public performance royalties, cutting revenue that used to flow through collective licensing.

So the domestic scene is the one growing fastest in plays and the one shrinking fastest in per-stream value. A cumbia act with millions of Argentine streams can still earn less than a trap act with a fraction of the plays spread across richer markets.

Where the leaks hide

For an exporting Argentine artist, the risk is not reach. It is accounting.

The BZRP model is built on collaboration, which means split ownership on nearly every release. When a session lands 400 million plays across a dozen countries, every unregistered writer share, every missing ISRC, and every DSP that does not receive clean metadata becomes money that sits in suspense. DSP means digital service provider, the platforms that pay out streaming royalties.

The Loud and Clear data Spotify released in 2026 shows roughly half of an average artist’s streams now come from outside the home country. For Argentine trap that share is far higher, which means the metadata has to survive dozens of tax and payment jurisdictions before it reaches the artist.

What an independent act should do about it

The playbook splits cleanly by scene.

If you make cumbia or RKT for a domestic audience, your growth is real but your per-stream rate is under pressure. Volume and catalog depth matter more than a single viral hit, and you want a distributor that reports Argentine peso earnings transparently rather than burying them in a blended global rate.

If you export, splits are the whole game. Register every collaborator before release, lock ISRCs and songwriter shares at delivery, and use a distributor that pushes clean DDEX metadata to every market you chart in. DDEX means Digital Data Exchange, the standard that carries credits and splits between platforms.

InterSpace Distribution built for exactly this gap. Transparent per-territory reporting through wallet.interspace.ink, DDEX-native delivery, and pre-registered splits mean a nine-way BZRP-style session pays out to nine people instead of stranding the surplus. The cumbia is booming at home. The job is making sure the money that leaves the country actually comes back.

Argentina’s most-streamed genre is now cumbia, and Buenos Aires is the world capital of it.
