Tracks its systems flag as fully AI-made now carry an &#8220;AI&#8221; badge, earn nothing from streams, and cannot be sold direct-to-fan. <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/06\/29\/tidal-cracks-down-on-ai-music-by-cutting-off-monetization\/\">TechCrunch first reported<\/a> the policy in late June.<\/p>\n<p>That is a bigger shift than the badge suggests. For the first time, whether your track keeps its royalties depends on a single metadata field, and that field is set inside your distributor&#8217;s delivery, not on the platform.<\/p>\n<h2>TIDAL drew the first hard line<\/h2>\n<p>Other services label AI music. TIDAL is the first to demonetize it outright, regardless of whether any fraud is detected. Tony Gervino, TIDAL&#8217;s EVP and editor-in-chief, framed it around listeners: &#8220;Many have told us they do not want to be exposed to, or prompted to listen to, wholly AI-generated music.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>TIDAL says it will use automated tools to identify fully AI-generated tracks and to strip out uploads that impersonate a specific artist. It calls the policy a &#8220;living document,&#8221; so the rules will move.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/by-refusing-to-pay-royalties-to-ai-music-this-streaming-platform-sets-a-precedent-during-uncertain-times\/\">Vice framed the move as a precedent<\/a>. When one platform proves it can cut a category of upload out of the royalty pool, the others have a template.<\/p>\n<h2>The platforms are no longer aligned<\/h2>\n<p>Six months ago the major services read AI music roughly the same way. They no longer do. An indie release now hits four different rulebooks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>TIDAL:<\/strong> fully AI tracks are badged and earn zero royalties, effective July 15.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Deezer:<\/strong> AI tracks are pulled from editorial playlists and algorithmic recommendations, and excluded from royalties when tied to fraud signals, part of the same fraud fight that <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/france-streaming-passed-700-million-euros-in-2025-on-deezer-fraudulent-ai-streams-no-longer-get-a-cut\/\">reshaped payouts in France<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spotify:<\/strong> no ban on AI itself, but a spam filter that targets mass uploads and 30-second royalty-farming tracks, plus deletion of 75 million &#8220;spammy&#8221; tracks over 12 months.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Apple Music:<\/strong> transparency tags to distinguish AI music, no monetization change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The scale behind the crackdown is real. Deezer has said it receives more than 30,000 fully AI-generated tracks a day, up from 20,000 in April and 10,000 in January, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-has-deleted-75m-spammy-tracks-as-it-unveils-new-ai-music-policies\/\">Music Business Worldwide<\/a>. On some days that is close to half of everything uploaded.<\/p>\n<h2>The DDEX field is now a paycheck<\/h2>\n<p>DDEX means Digital Data Exchange, the industry body that sets the metadata standards distributors use to deliver music to stores. Spotify, working with DDEX, launched an AI disclosure field that lets a rightsholder mark whether AI touched the vocals, the instrumentation, or the post-production. The credits beta went live in April 2026.<\/p>\n<p>That field is the difference between &#8220;assisted by AI&#8221; and &#8220;generated by AI,&#8221; and platforms are starting to read it. Set it honestly and a human-made track with an AI mastering pass stays clean. Leave it blank on a fully synthetic upload and you risk the spam filter deciding for you.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the catch for self-releasing artists. That disclosure only reaches the platform if your distributor supports the DDEX AI field and delivers it. Spotify&#8217;s launch partners include Amuse, Believe, <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/universal-now-owns-cd-baby-and-fuga-regulators-made-it-sell-the-one-business-that-sees-your-data\/\">CD Baby and FUGA<\/a>, DistroKid, Downtown and EMPIRE. If your distributor does not pass the field, your metadata arrives incomplete, and incomplete metadata is exactly what the new spam filters are tuned to distrust.<\/p>\n<h2>What this means for indie artists and labels<\/h2>\n<p>The takeaway is not &#8220;avoid AI.&#8221; It is that clean, honest, DDEX-native delivery is now a monetization requirement, not a nicety.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fill in the AI disclosure field on every release, even human-made ones, so the &#8220;assisted&#8221; and &#8220;generated&#8221; cases stay clearly separated.<\/li>\n<li>Confirm your distributor actually delivers the DDEX AI field, not just that it accepts an upload.<\/li>\n<li>Watch your per-platform royalty reporting, because a track that earns on Spotify may now earn nothing on TIDAL.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is the layer InterSpace Distribution is built for.
