{"id":8701,"date":"2026-07-24T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/tyla-on-apop-global-stardom-and-redefining-african-pop\/"},"modified":"2026-07-24T14:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T14:00:00","slug":"tyla-on-apop-global-stardom-and-redefining-african-pop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/tyla-on-apop-global-stardom-and-redefining-african-pop\/","title":{"rendered":"Tyla on A*POP, Global Stardom and Redefining African Pop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South African pop artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tylaworld.com\/\"><strong>Tyla<\/strong><\/a> appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/apple-music\/\"><strong>Apple Music Radio<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s <strong>The Ebro Show<\/strong> on 23 July to discuss her <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/tyla-releases-sophomore-album-apop\/\">sophomore album <strong>A*POP<\/strong><\/a>, her journey from a bedroom singer to global recognition, and the complexities of representing African pop on the world stage.<\/p>\n<h2>From South Africa to the World<\/h2>\n<p>Reflecting on her rapid rise, Tyla said she could never have predicted the path her life has taken. \u201cEverything from the good times to the bad times, it was really a story,\u201d she told host Ebro Darden. \u201cI remember just being in South Africa, simple life, no drama, just me, my siblings, my family, making videos and singing. My life completely changed to now being in front of the world, opinions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She described the experience as a learning curve that ultimately strengthened her. \u201cI love the fact that I experienced what I did because I really feel like a strong woman internally,\u201d she said. \u201cI came in very green, with an innocent idea of the industry. It is rainbows and singing, but you also have to be strong-minded to stay yourself. Right now I\u2019m the most confident I\u2019ve ever been, I\u2019m strong, I\u2019m excited, I\u2019m at peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Navigating Identity on a Global Stage<\/h2>\n<p>Tyla addressed the challenges of explaining her identity as a South African coloured woman to international audiences. She recalled the backlash she faced after a previous interview, saying, \u201cPrior to the <a href=\"https:\/\/thebreakfastclub.iheart.com\/\">Breakfast Club<\/a> I did answer that question and already I started getting backlash. I was like, \u2018Whoa, I don\u2019t know what else to say.\u2019 I never had to explain myself before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She noted that travelling the world helped her understand how context shapes meaning. \u201cIn South Africa we also have a derogatory term, so I get why it would be triggering. I think it was a very important thing for me to go through and learn, and for the conversations to just open up.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Defining A*POP<\/h2>\n<p>Tyla described her new album <strong>A*POP<\/strong> as an effort to broaden the definition of an African pop star. \u201cA*POP is literally me trying to extend the idea of what an African pop star looks like, what an African pop star sounds like,\u201d she said. \u201cSometimes when you\u2019re from somewhere you\u2019re expected to look a certain way or sound a certain way. I\u2019ve seen things where they\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, Tyla\u2019s not African enough,\u2019 and I\u2019m like, what is African enough? It feels like we\u2019ve frozen in time with that type of ideology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that the album showcases her diverse influences. \u201cI\u2019m really excited to show just how diverse I am and how I grew up around so many different influences. With A*POP, it\u2019s really just that: I bring the A to pop.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Staying True at 24<\/h2>\n<p>Asked whether she worries about public perception, Tyla said she tries to remain honest and unfiltered. \u201cI\u2019m opinionated and blunt. Where I\u2019m from, the way we are, we just talk. Things aren\u2019t that serious. We don\u2019t know how to watch your words. We\u2019re human, guys, relax.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She acknowledged that her team often urges caution. \u201cMy managers, they always try to shackle me. They\u2019re like, \u2018Tyla, put your phone down. Stop making videos, stop talking.\u2019 And I probably should listen to them because I get into a lot of\u2026 But I just think it\u2019s more interesting. I still want to be a 24-year-old girl.
