The Music Climate Pact<\/strong><\/a> together with Seismic<\/strong><\/a> today announce essential industry training ahead of key incoming legislation on communications around green sustainability: Navigating Sustainability & Green Claims in the Music Industry<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

All organisations manufacturing or selling products in the E.U., including those in the recorded music industry, need to prepare for new regulations that are being introduced to support and enable climate sustainability. These include the key ECGT (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition) directive<\/strong>. Coming into effect this September 2026, this legislation will have a vital role to play in targeting the growing issue of \u2018greenwashing\u2019 by banning vague environmental claims and uncertified sustainability labelling.<\/p>\n

To navigate these changes together, the Music Climate Pact is hosting an industry-wide, free webinar in partnership with sustainability experts Seismic, with the main goal of educating and encouraging our sector to align on how it can lead in communicating its environmental initiatives with knowledge and confidence.\u00a0The session, which will also include a guest contribution from Dylan Siegler, SVP Head of Sustainability at Universal Music Group to highlight their work in this space, will focus on how to best leverage your impact and deliver authentic communication that will ultimately resonate with colleagues, creatives and consumers alike. \u00a0<\/p>\n

While this will be of interest to all\u00a0those making and selling products across the music industry, this session is specifically designed for the recorded music value chain, including manufacturers, record labels, and retailers across our trade association networks including AIM, BPI, ERA, and IMPALA.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis legislation is an opportunity to raise the bar for how we communicate about sustainability. It\u2019s not about saying less, it\u2019s about backing our environmental claims with good evidence. That\u2019s good for consumers, because they get clear, trustworthy information, and it\u2019s good for our industry because it builds credibility around the progress we\u2019re making.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cECGT is an opportunity for the music industry to raise the bar, not only on how environmental claims are communicated, but on how change happens across the entire value chain. No label, manufacturer, retailer or artist can solve this in isolation. The real opportunity lies in working together to create shared understanding, stronger evidence and claims that audiences can genuinely trust. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBut first, the industry needs to understand what is changing and start preparing now. This is not something that can be ignored or left to individual organisations to solve alone.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Convened by UK\u2019s Association of Independent Music (AIM) in collaboration with UK record labels body, the BPI, the Music Climate Pact was established by its founder record company Signatories and industry Supporters to harness the power of the recorded music industry towards inspiring transformational action on the climate crisis. Its fundamental aim is \u2018decarbonising\u2019 the global music business in alignment with the latest climate science. \u00a0See Notes.<\/em><\/p>\n

Convened by the Association of Independent Music (AIM) in 2021 in collaboration with UK record labels association the BPI, the Music Climate Pact was established by its founder Signatories and Supporters to harness the power of the music industry towards inspiring transformational action on the climate crisis and \u2018decarbonise\u2019 the global music business in alignment with the latest climate science. By 2022, the founding Signatories had signed up to either the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi<\/b><\/a>) or the UN-backed Race to Zero<\/b> SME Climate Commitment \u2013 ensuring their ability to work with experts to set and execute actionable climate targets on which they will report regularly. The Pact, developed with support from the UN Environmental Programme, marks a significant step in aligning the global music business, and the measures already taken by individual companies, around a coherent and industry-co-ordinated strategy. This will seek to unite and take forward existing climate initiatives.<\/p>\n

By aligning as a sector, it stands to de-politicise sustainability and address its biggest environmental impacts in an efficient and collaborative way. There is much to be done to become a more sustainable industry, but the MCP will be guided by climate science and take tangible, unified action and regularly update on its progress.<\/p>\n
