Its Export Money Fell 8.6%."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>France closed 2025 as the world&#8217;s sixth-largest recorded music market, with EUR 1.071 billion in revenue, up 3.9% and a tenth consecutive year of growth, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/frances-recorded-music-revenues-hit-1-21bn-in-2025-up-3-9-yoy-subscription-streaming-revenues-grew-5-9-yoy\/\">Music Business Worldwide&#8217;s<\/a> read of the annual SNEP report.<\/p>\n<p>SNEP means Syndicat National de l&#8217;Edition Phonographique, the French labels body that publishes the market&#8217;s official numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Its 2025 figures point in two directions at once. At home, French repertoire has never been stronger. Abroad, the money went backwards.<\/p>\n<h2>The home market is working<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Streaming revenue crossed EUR 700 million for the first time, landing at EUR 702 million, up 5.7%.<\/li>\n<li>Paid subscription made up EUR 553 million of that, up 5.9%, across 12.6 million subscriptions.<\/li>\n<li>Ad-supported audio grew fastest in percentage terms, up 12% to EUR 84 million.<\/li>\n<li>Streaming video was the only line to shrink, down 2.9% to EUR 65 million.<\/li>\n<li>Vinyl added EUR 113 million, up 14.8%. CD held near flat at EUR 89 million.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Local artists took 75% of Top 200 album sales and 16 of the Top 20 albums. Rap and pop each accounted for roughly a third of streaming consumption for the first time, and nine of the ten albums certified Diamond in 2025 were rap records produced in France, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalmusicnews.com\/2026\/03\/24\/french-music-industry-2025-breakdown\/\">Digital Music News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The number that moved the wrong way<\/h2>\n<p>Export revenue fell 8.6% to EUR 148 million, down from EUR 162 million in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The easy read is that 2024 was inflated by the Paris Olympics, and exports are still up 11% across two years. The harder read is the ceiling underneath. France&#8217;s paid streaming penetration sits at 27.1%, up 1.2 points but low for a top-six market. A capped domestic base plus a soft export line is a growth problem, not a victory lap.<\/p>\n<h2>The French-language audience does not live in France<\/h2>\n<p>Spotify&#8217;s own francophone data tells a different story than the SNEP export line.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>French-language streams on Spotify grew 192% between 2019 and 2024.<\/li>\n<li>123 million users consumed French-language content in 2024.<\/li>\n<li>More than 100 million of those listeners sat outside France, Quebec and Belgium.<\/li>\n<li>Francophone playlist additions rose 26% between 2023 and 2024.<\/li>\n<li>Spotify&#8217;s Gustav Gyllenhammar named Asia, Africa and Latin America as the markets where listenership is &#8220;exploding.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those come from Spotify&#8217;s francophone report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/french-language-music-streams-surge-192-on-spotify-since-2019\/\">covered by MBW<\/a>. The gap between them and a falling export line is a distribution gap, not a demand gap.<\/p>\n<h2>What a French independent should change<\/h2>\n<h3>Ship to the platforms francophone Africa actually uses<\/h3>\n<p>Boomplay, Audiomack and Anghami carry Abidjan, Dakar, Douala and the Maghreb in ways a Spotify France storefront does not. If your delivery stops at the default major-market DSP list, your Ivorian and Algerian listeners are on YouTube at a fraction of the rate.<\/p>\n<h3>Register splits before release, not after<\/h3>\n<p>Congolese, Ivorian and Algerian collaborators on a Paris drill record are routinely thin in metadata. Unregistered contributor shares do not accrue quietly, they sit unmatched.<\/p>\n<h3>Know the 1.2% levy<\/h3>\n<p>Since January 2024, France taxes streaming services with over EUR 20 million in French turnover at 1.2% of revenue. CNM means Centre National de la Musique, the body the levy funds. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/france-streaming-taxes-spotify-deezer-dsp-response-reaction\/\">Billboard<\/a> tracked the fight that cut it from a proposed 1.75%. It raises roughly EUR 13.7 million a year, and part of that funds export support French independents can apply for.<\/p>\n<h3>Treat Deezer and Qobuz as tier one<\/h3>\n<p>Deezer grew French revenue 4.2% in Q1 2026 and reached 5.8 million direct subscribers by H1. One caution: fully AI-generated tracks passed 50% of Deezer&#8217;s daily uploads in June 2026, at a peak near 90,000 a day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/deezer-50-percent-daily-song-uploads-fully-ai-generated\/\">per Billboard<\/a>. Editorial slots there are only getting harder to win.<\/p>\n<h2>The distribution read<\/h2>\n<p>French rap has close to nowhere left to grow in domestic chart share. The next unit of growth is francophone, and it is offshore.<\/p>\n<p>That makes DDEX-native delivery into regional DSPs, plus clean multi-party splits, the difference between a hit in Paris and a paid catalogue in Abidjan. DDEX means Digital Data Exchange, the metadata standard DSPs use to ingest releases and route royalties. Same pattern as <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/italys-music-market-hit-579m-up-10-7-its-charts-are-85-local-and-the-export-line-is-the-distribution-story\/\">Italy&#8217;s 85%-local charts<\/a> and in <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/poland-is-a-top-16-music-market-growing-14-its-charts-are-almost-all-polish-rap-and-a-third-of-streams-are-free\/\">Poland&#8217;s rap-dominated top 16 market<\/a>: local dominance is not the same as international earnings, and the fix is almost always in the delivery layer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"France&#8217;s recorded music market hit EUR 1.071 billion in 2025 and its charts are the most local in two decades, but export revenue fell 8.6% to EUR 148 million.
