Local Artists Get About 9% of the Money."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Zealand music generated 226.8 million streams between January and March 2026, its strongest opening quarter in four years and the highest Q1 total across the last 16 quarters.<\/p>\n<p>The figure comes from the NZ Music Commission&#8217;s quarterly statistics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emptyspaces.co.nz\/nz-music-consumption-continues-growth-as-streaming-hits-new-high\/\">reported by Empty Spaces<\/a>. It is up 5.3% on the previous quarter and 3.8% on Q1 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Then comes the number that complicates the headline. The 20 most-streamed New Zealand tracks in the quarter drew 19.4 million streams, or 8.6% of all local streaming, and they came from just 12 primary artists.<\/p>\n<h2>The year that set it up<\/h2>\n<p>Recorded Music NZ&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/recordedmusic.co.nz\/news\/2025-aotearoa-music-market-nz-artists-help-drive-growth-in-music-consumption\">2025 Aotearoa market report<\/a> gives the base line:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>12.4 billion total audio streams in New Zealand, up 1% on 2024. That is a mature market, not a growth one.<\/li>\n<li>Just under 900 million of those were New Zealand music, up 3%. Local share sits near 7.3%.<\/li>\n<li>New Zealand album sales grew 18%, against 10% for the market overall. Physical was up 13%.<\/li>\n<li>Waiata reo Maori streams reached 69 million, up from 64 million, and te reo Maori album sales tripled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Recorded Music NZ chief executive Jo Oliver called 2025 &#8220;particularly strong for New Zealand albums.&#8221; Marlon Williams, Lorde and Devilskin carried much of that.<\/p>\n<p>The singles chart told a different story. Alex Warren held No. 1 for 15 straight weeks with &#8220;Ordinary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Growth is real. The revenue share is not moving.<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers Oli Wilson, Catherine Hoad, Dave Carter and Jesse Austin-Stewart of Massey University put the harder number on it <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/discovering-new-nz-music-in-the-streaming-age-is-getting-harder-whats-the-future-for-local-artists-257449\">in The Conversation<\/a>: as little as 9% of New Zealand streaming, download and physical sales revenue reaches local artists.<\/p>\n<p>Their discovery data is worse than the consumption data suggests:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the 2024 Official Aotearoa Music Charts, one New Zealand artist made the Top 50 Singles. Four New Zealand albums made the Top 50 Albums, mostly older-catalogue compilations.<\/li>\n<li>Only two nationwide commercial radio stations played more than 20% local music in 2024, in a country where 46% of people listen to radio daily.<\/li>\n<li>Spotify&#8217;s 2024 year-end local playlist carried a single New Zealand track.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Their policy asks include local content quotas on international streamers, a Canada-style revenue-sharing arrangement between streamers and broadcasters, and merging NZ On Air with the Music Commission.<\/p>\n<p>None of that is law yet. Artists releasing this quarter have to work the market as it is.<\/p>\n<h2>What the market as it is looks like<\/h2>\n<p>IFPI, which means the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, put New Zealand&#8217;s 2025 recorded music growth at 3.0% in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifpi.org\/global-music-report-2026-global-recorded-music-revenues-grow-6-4-as-record-companies-drive-innovation\/\">Global Music Report 2026<\/a>, against 6.4% globally.<\/p>\n<p>So New Zealand grows at roughly half the world rate, local repertoire holds under 8% of domestic listening, and a dozen acts absorb most of the local attention.<\/p>\n<p>The growth an Aotearoa act can actually capture is therefore mostly offshore. Australia, the UK, the US and the Pacific diaspora are where the incremental listener lives, and which DSPs, meaning digital service providers, you reach there is a delivery decision rather than a marketing one.<\/p>\n<h2>What to actually do with a 2026 New Zealand release<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Register for chart eligibility.<\/strong> Recorded Music NZ runs the Official Aotearoa Music Charts. Unregistered releases do not count, no matter how they stream.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tag te reo Maori properly.<\/strong> Language metadata is what feeds waiata reo Maori reporting and the editorial playlists built off it. A blank language field costs you a lane that grew while the market flatlined.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plan for export from day one.<\/strong> Territory-level royalty reporting tells you whether your Sydney or Los Angeles audience is real before you spend on a tour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lock splits before release.<\/strong> Retroactive split changes on a track that broke in three territories is the most expensive admin problem in independent music.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why this is a distribution problem<\/h2>\n<p>An artist with 7% of their home market&#8217;s attention and most of their upside abroad needs two things from a distributor: DDEX-native delivery, where DDEX means Digital Data Exchange, the metadata standard DSPs actually ingest, and royalty reporting broken out by territory rather than pooled into one line.<\/p>\n<p>InterSpace Distribution builds both into the artist dashboard.
