We require the following files for every HD and 4K video
- ProRes encode
- Screen grab
ProRes encode
Video Stream
Technical specs
- The encode format (codec) must be Apple ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 4444, or ProRes 4444 XQ
- The file must use the .mov container
- Acceptable pixel dimensions
- 4096 x 2160 (4K-DIC 4K)
- 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD)
- 1920 x 1080 (HD-1080)
- 1280 x 720 (HD-720)
- The overall bitrate mode must be Variable (ie VBR)
- Frame rate must be 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97 or 30 frames per seconds. Keep the frame rate the same as original source
- Note that some services may convert the frame rate for supply to consumer
- ITU-R BT.709 colour space must be used. YUV with chroma subsampling appropriate to encode format (ie 4:2:2 or 4:4:4:4)
- Square pixels must be used (ie pixel aspect ratio =1:1)
- Progressive scans versus interlaced considerations
- 4K video must be progressive scan
- Progressive scan is preferred for HD videos, but if only the content were natively produced as such
- Interlaced content is acceptable for HD videos if the source was interlaced and the frame rate is either 25 or 29.97 fps. The frame rate of interlaced content must not have been changed by any subsequent processing.
- Overall bitrate must be acceptable for encode format. This will vary based on;
- The visual content (VBR encoding will compress different materials as appropriate to the content)
- Weather the encode is ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 4444 or ProRes 4444 XQ
- The frame rate
- The pixel dimension
The below table indicate example target of bitrates according to this criteria
Dimension | Frame Rate | ProRes 422 HQ | ProRes 4444 | ProRes 4444 XQ |
3840 x 2160 | 24 | 707 Mbps | 1061 Mbps | 1591 Mbps |
3840 x 2160 | 25 | 737 Mbps | 1106 Mbps | 1659 Mbps |
3840 x 2160 | 30 | 884 Mbps | 1326 Mbps | 1989 Mbps |
1920 x 1080 | 24 | 176 Mbps | 264 Mbps | 396 Mbps |
1920 x 1080 | 25 | 184 Mbps | 275 Mbps | 413 Mbps |
1920 x 1080 | 30 | 220 Mbps | 330 Mbps | 495 Mbps |
1280 x 720 | 24 | 88 Mbps | 132 Mbps | 198 Mbps |
1280 x 720 | 25 | 92 Mbps | 138 Mbps | 206 Mbps |
1280 x 720 | 30 | 110 Mbps | 165 Mbps | 247 Mbps |
Visual considerations
- No perceivable defects or visual degradation. Content must have been converted correctly from source material and must not have been upconverted during editing. No digital artefacts, pixelation or interlacing issues from an analogue source. No dropouts or corruption in the video stream
- Do not upscale, submit content in its native pixel dimensions, SD content that has been upconverted to HD will not be acceptable (SD must be submitted in its native form as SD)
- The video must begin and end with black; at least one frame of 100% pure digital black at the start and finish
- Visible text; some are acceptable (e.g. key credits) but some are not (e.g. logos, URLs, email addresses, phone numbers, advertising or up-selling to any website or service). Any text that promotes any brand or service beyond simple crediting that is directly related to the video itself, is not permitted
- Explicit material is accepted if the product metadata denotes its content as explicit. Pornography is not acceptable
- See Apple’s style guide for further video quality concerns Audio Streams
Technical Specs
Audio format must be PCM (MP3, AAC, or any other compressed formats are not acceptable)
- Must have one audio track with two channels (ie one stereo track)
- Sample rate must be 48kHz or any standard sample rate greater than that (e.g. 96kHz). 44.1kHz is not acceptable
- Bit depth must be 16 or 24
- Audio must be normalised to EBU R128 broadcast standards (-23 LUFS program loudness overall for the track)
- Audible considerations
- Music video must contain one sound recording (ie track or song) only
- Ensure there are no perceivable defects in the audio stream, for example, unintended sound, static or dropouts
Technical Specs
- Pixel dimension must match the video itself (e.g. 3840 x 2160, 1920 x 1080, 1280 x 720)
- Document type must be JPG/JPEG with .jpg extensions, or PNG with .png extension
- Colour space must be RGB
Visual Consideration
- The screengrab must be still taken from the actual video, not an image from any other source
- Areas of black or inactive pixels must be removed from the screengrab. This may require zooming in on the active image area to ensure it fills the visible dimension. When doing so, ensure that the artefacts are not introduced and that image quality is maintained to the highest degree possible
- The image should contain little or no motion blur
- It is preferred that the image is aesthetically pleasing or flattering (e.g. not an image that has the with their eyes closed or contorting their face or in the middle of fast movement and blur)
- Explicit material is not accepted
- No image degradation or fuzziness that may have been caused by upscaling from a smaller resolution source
- No blur, pixelation or file corruption or damage
- If the video is interlaced ensure that the screengrab has been deinterlaced
