Fireboy first teased the record with a monochrome video clip captioned “CLAAT! 08/07,” a rollout style he has used before to build anticipation without over-explaining a release ahead of time. Coverage of the exact date split slightly between outlets, Audiomack’s own listing shows August 6, while Fireboy’s teaser and several Nigerian entertainment sites pointed to August 7, but every source agrees the single arrived this week and that Masicka is credited as featured artist, not a remixer added after the fact.
Who Masicka is, and why the pairing isn’t random
Masicka, born Javaun Fearon, is one of dancehall’s more commercially proven names outside Jamaica. His 2022 independent album “438” was Jamaica’s number one album of that year on Spotify, and he later signed to Def Jam Recordings, releasing “Pieces” as his major-label debut. His 2023 album “Generation of Kings” charted in more than 40 countries and already included a Nigerian collaborator, singer Fave, so “CLAAT!” is not his first pass at Afrobeats-adjacent sounds. It is, however, a rare instance of a Def Jam-backed dancehall artist appearing on a lead single from a major Nigerian label act’s album rollout, rather than a deep cut or a remix buried later in the tracklist.
The album: ZUKO! is coming, but there’s no date yet
Fireboy confirmed the title of his fifth studio album, ZUKO!, through a cinematic teaser posted to Instagram on August 5, two days before “CLAAT!” arrived. No release date has been set. It will follow “Adedamola” (August 2024), and sits in a discography that includes “Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps” (2019), “Apollo” (2020) and “Playboy” (2022) – four albums in six years for an artist who signed to YBNL Nation in 2018 and broke internationally with “Peru,” later remixed with Ed Sheeran.
Using a Caribbean feature to open an album cycle is a specific choice. It signals ZUKO! is reaching outward again after the more inward-looking “Adedamola,” and it gives the rollout a story beyond “new Fireboy song.” Artists opening an album era with a cross-border feature tend to be making a statement about who the record is for, and pairing with an artist whose own fanbase runs through the Caribbean and North America rather than West Africa reads as a deliberate attempt to widen ZUKO!’s reach before a single note of the full project is public.

“CLAAT!” didn’t land in isolation. The distribution angle worth watching
“CLAAT!” going out through EMPIRE alongside YBNL Nation is not incidental. EMPIRE has spent the past several years building direct relationships with both Afrobeats and dancehall artists specifically because those catalogs travel well across the same diaspora-driven playlists and radio formats in the UK, US and Caribbean. A single credited to both a Lagos label and a US-based independent distributor, featuring a Kingston-born, Def Jam-signed artist, is a small but clean example of what cross-border release infrastructure actually looks like in practice, three separate business relationships converging on one three-minute record, all visible in the metadata before a single stream is counted.

None of this needs to be dressed up as a “genre-breaking moment” to matter. What’s notable is more practical: a Def Jam dancehall artist with real chart numbers of his own chose to open his verse on a Nigerian label’s lead single, and a Nigerian label distributed it through EMPIRE to reach both audiences on release day rather than treating it as a regional curiosity.
