Lagos Launches 8-Month Rehab on Lekki–Ajah Road to Ease Traffic

Lagos State Government has announced a major eight-month rehabilitation of the busy Lekki–Ajah corridor, scheduled to begin November 15, 2025, and run through July 15, 2026.

The roadworks will be carried out in two phases to minimize disruption and maintain at least one operational lane in most sections, according to Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi. The49thStreet+2Vanguard News+2

Two-Phase Rehab Plan

  • Phase 1 covers the stretch from the Lekki 1st Toll Gate to Lekki 2nd Toll Gate, broken into seven subsections. During this phase, one of the two lanes will be closed for construction while the other remains open. Vanguard News+1
  • Phase 2 runs from Lekki 2nd Toll Gate to the Ajah under-bridge, divided into four sections. Traffic from Ajah heading toward Lekki will be diverted into a single lane as work progresses on the other lane. Nairametrics

Throughout both phases, motorists traveling toward Ajah are expected to have continuous access, although some partial closures and lane shifts are unavoidable. The49thStreet

Why the Rehab Matters?

The Lekki–Ajah corridor is one of Lagos’ most heavily trafficked routes, serving both residential and commercial communities. Improving its surface and capacity is seen as a critical infrastructure priority to reduce congestion and enhance safety. The49thStreet

Commissioner Osiyemi emphasized that the project is part of a larger commitment to modernize Lagos’ road network and deliver long-term benefits for commuters. The Nigerian Inquirer+1

What Lagos State Is Doing to Mitigate Disruption?

To ease the construction impact, the Lagos government has:

  • Activated a night-shift construction strategy, pushing more work during off-peak hours. Vanguard News
  • Deployed traffic management personnel, including LASTMA officers, to direct motorists and manage diversions. Vanguard News
  • Encouraged commuters to plan ahead, use alternative routes when possible, and comply with posted traffic signs. TheCable

In addition, the government has reassured residents that through traffic will remain open for much of the rehabilitation, reducing the risk of prolonged gridlock.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among Lagos commuters. While many welcome the long-awaited upgrade, others are worried about how extended lane closures will affect daily travel.

State officials have called for patience, reiterating that the short-term inconvenience will yield significant long-term gains — smoother rides, safer roads, and less wear and tear on vehicles. Nairametrics

Beyond this project, the rehab aligns with Lagos’ broader infrastructure goals, including complementary work on service lanes, drainage, and potentially even future rail integration along the corridor. Banwo & Ighodalo+1

Why does it sound as a Big Deal for Lagos?

  1. Improved Safety — Addressing potholes and worn pavement will reduce accident risks.
  2. Economic Impact — Better traffic flow boosts productivity and supports business activity in Lekki and Ajah.
  3. Urban Mobility — The project complements ongoing investments in transport infrastructure, including rail and expressway upgrades. Wikipedia
  4. Long-Term Vision — This isn’t just a repair job — it’s part of Lagos’ strategy to sustain its growth through infrastructure resilience.
