Spotify has changed how it counts podcast plays, now requiring that an episode be watched or listened to for at least thirty seconds before it registers as a play. The company said its audience behavior data indicates that thirty seconds is a reliable threshold for intentional consumption, filtering out accidental starts and other low-intent activity.
Over the past year, Spotify discussed its findings with industry groups including the Alliance for Measurement in Podcasting (AMP). The data contributed to AMP’s recently announced Podcast Plays definition.
Alongside the updated play-count standard, Spotify for Creators now includes new charts, metrics, and trend tools. Creators can view how their audience splits between first-time listeners and returning fans, compare each episode’s performance against their catalog, and examine fan activity through an engagement tab.
A redesigned homepage surfaces what the platform describes as the most relevant data at a glance, and expanded historical data allows creators to track plays, audience interactions, and growth back to their first day on Spotify.
