Nigerian artist Taves has released a new project, “Popstar – Side A,” an eight-track EP that examines the concept of pop stardom through a blend of R&B, AfroPop, and funk influences.
The EP opens with “Chaos,” where Taves sings about life as an uncontrollable rollercoaster and asks for understanding from loved ones as he navigates personal uncertainties. “Isn’t It Beautiful” follows, pairing soulful choral vocals with a funk-inspired beat, while the lyrics describe an idealized vision of love as a warm refuge. On the second verse, he admits to telling lies to protect a perfect image and justifies the dishonesty as common behavior.
“Simone” carries a Western pop bounce reminiscent of Max Martin productions. The project shifts back to mid-tempo AfroPop on “Deliver Me,” built around shakers and acoustic guitar, with a dynamic second verse that moves between themes of romance, domesticity, and confidence.
The single “Uche Jombo” samples a classic Wizkid track, reworking it with fresh production and a more assertive vocal approach. “Preaching” returns to the Afro-Swing/Garage template, with introspective lyrics about losing one’s mind on difficult days and seeking divine support. “Space” is a stripped-down R&B cut where the narrator pledges to do anything to keep a lover from leaving.
The EP closes with “Take Me Away,” a reflective track built on soft piano and light drums that carries a gospel undertone. The lyrics cast the subject in a heavenly light, with lines about needing someone to “cast my demons.”
