Makhanj, a South African singer-songwriter, has issued her first full-length studio project, the album Transkei.
Named after the former Transkei region, the record weaves together themes of identity, belonging, womanhood and cultural heritage. Its songs draw on the artist’s personal experiences and family history, touching on home, resilience, love and self-discovery. The release follows a series of singles that first introduced Makhanj to listeners.
“Transkei is about remembering where I come from while embracing who I am becoming,” Makhanj said. “Every song tells a story that has shaped me in one way or another. My hope is that people hear their own stories in this album and feel encouraged to honour where they come from.”
The album was shaped by an all-women creative team. Multidisciplinary artist Tony Gum led the creative direction, and photographer Nondumiso Msimanga produced the accompanying imagery.
Makhanj described the collaborative choice as intentional. “Transkei is about honouring where I come from while creating space for women to tell our stories in our own way. Working with incredible women throughout the creative process made this project even more meaningful because every visual and every detail reflects our shared vision and lived experiences.”
Blending contemporary African musical influences with personal storytelling, Transkei is now available on major digital streaming platforms.
