Spotify to Label AI-Generated Artist Profiles Starting Mid-September

Spotify is launching a new label to distinguish AI-generated artist identities, with the badge appearing on profiles and in search results starting mid-September.

Spotify is preparing to roll out a new label that identifies artist profiles presenting an AI-generated identity, giving listeners a clearer signal about who, or what, is behind the music they stream.

The “AI Personas” badge will appear across several surfaces in the mobile app from mid-September, including artist profile banners, About sections, Search results, and track rows inside playlists. Its purpose is to distinguish profiles representing real people from those built around a human-like, AI-created persona.

Spotify said the label focuses strictly on the identity of the artist, not on how the music itself was produced. An act can use artificial intelligence in the creative process without being classified as an AI Persona.

One of the most significant operational changes involves recommendations. By default, music from artists flagged as AI Personas will be excluded from personalized suggestions, a step the company says gives users more control over the content they encounter.

Beginning August 11, artists can voluntarily disclose through Spotify for Artists that their profile represents an AI Persona. The platform will not rely on self-identification alone. It plans to combine human review with AI-powered investigative tools to detect profiles that may qualify for the label. Artists who are labelled by Spotify will be notified and can either confirm the classification or appeal the decision.

The move comes as AI-generated music and virtual artist identities become more prevalent on streaming services, raising questions about transparency and authenticity. Spotify stressed that the AI Personas badge is not a judgment on whether a song was created with AI tools; it answers a narrower question: whether the artist identity presented to listeners is an actual human being.
