Spotify will begin displaying an AI Persona badge on artist profiles starting mid-September, signaling to listeners that an artist’s identity may be AI-generated rather than human.
The move expands Spotify’s existing efforts to bring transparency to AI-generated music. The platform previously introduced a credits system for musicians to disclose their use of AI and a Verified badge for authenticated human artists.
How the AI Persona Badge Works
The new badge will appear on artist profiles, in search results, and within playlists. Uploaders can self-disclose as an AI Persona, which Spotify expects to be the primary method of identification.
“We hope artists will be transparent, so we are giving them the opportunity to disclose, but we won’t rely on self-disclosure alone,” Spotify stated.
Detection and Enforcement
Spotify will also proactively review artist profiles and flag those whose public identity, including name and imagery, appears to represent photorealistic AI-generated identities. The company will begin with artists who meet defined audience thresholds, ensuring the labels cover the majority of profiles that users visit.
Listeners will eventually be able to report profiles they suspect are undisclosed AI Personas. If Spotify identifies an AI Persona that was not self-disclosed, tapping the badge will indicate that the label was applied by Spotify. An appeals process will be available for artists who believe they were incorrectly flagged.
Spotify emphasized that the badge relates to the artist’s public identity, not how the music was created. The existing song credits system handles disclosures about AI use in music production.
Impact on Recommendations
By default, Spotify will not include AI Personas in editorial or algorithmic recommendations. Music from these artists will not appear in personalized recommendations unless a user actively follows the AI Persona.
“While we believe all artists have creative choice in determining how they present themselves, Spotify’s programming is focused on elevating music from authentic artists building careers in music,” the company explained.
Spotify also disclosed that it tunes its algorithms to highlight authentic human artists and, based on available signals, strives to exclude spam, slop, and low-effort content from recommendations.
