AI Music’s ‘Human Premium’ Puts Artist Identity at Center

The human premium framework says AI music abundance makes taste, personality, and recognizable artistic identity more valuable than volume or technical perfection.
In the Era of Average AI Music, What's the 'Human Premium'? In the Era of Average AI Music, What's the 'Human Premium'?

As artificial intelligence (AI) tools make competent, listenable music available in seconds, a new framework called the human premium holds that individual artistic identity will become more valuable, not less.

AI music generation has removed scarcity from the market for average songs. Pleasant ambient tracks, competent pop songs and familiar-sounding background music can now be produced by the thousands in a single session.

That shift means competing with AI on volume, technical perfection or speed is unlikely to succeed. Machines can generate more alternatives, revise endlessly and operate without fatigue.

What the human premium covers

The human premium describes qualities tied to an individual artist rather than to production capacity. Those qualities include:

  • Taste and judgment
  • Personality and communication
  • Imperfection and unusual creative decisions

As machine-made music becomes cheaper and effectively infinite, these traits may become the main differentiators for human musicians.

Why ‘good music’ is no longer enough

For musicians, producing technically solid work is no longer sufficient. The volume of existing good music is already large, and AI is expected to expand it sharply.

Instead, artists may need to build recognizable musical identities, improve as performers and communicators, and make choices that reveal a specific point of view rather than imitate proven formulas.

The territory outside the lines

AI is likely to become highly effective at staying within established patterns. That leaves room for human creators willing to work outside those patterns.

The future may not belong to the musician who makes the most music or the most technically perfect music. It may belong to the musician who makes something that could only have come from them.
