John Mayer has launched his own label, Sob Rock Records, in partnership with Universal Music Group’s Mercury Records. The announcement brings the singer-songwriter back into a major-label partnership as he prepares new music.
The label takes its name from Mayer’s most recent album. Its launch was announced a day before his forthcoming single, “Tom and Jerry,” scheduled for release on October 23.
“Working with Tyler Arnold and the talented team at Mercury Records has already proven to be a great partnership,” said Mayer. “The path from creative vision to execution has never been easier or more rewarding. I feel very inspired, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
Tyler Arnold, Mercury Records’ chairman and chief executive officer, said the company would work with Mayer’s label to support his creative plans.
Mayer confirmed earlier this year that he was working on his next album.
“I’m working on the studio, I’m working on that record, and, purposely, my tide has recessed a little bit from the world. I’m investing all my time and energy into making a record so that when I come back out, I’ll have something to really present to the world.”
Mayer also expects a busy 2027, with a series of performances at Sphere in Las Vegas beginning in April.
