SoundCloud Now Lets Artists Keep 100 Percent. An International Wire Still Costs 10 Dollars a Payout.

SoundCloud fan-powered royalties explained: how each fan’s money is split, who qualifies, and why the 0% distribution fee in place since November 2025 came with payout fees of $0.50 to $25, which can take 29% of a small payout sent by international wire.

SoundCloud fan-powered royalties now come with a 0 percent distribution fee, down from 20 percent in November 2025, but every payout from SoundCloud for Artists carries a processing fee of $0.50 to $25 depending on how you are paid. For an artist paid by international wire, that fee can matter more than the commission it replaced.

Two things decide what a SoundCloud track is worth: how the platform splits each fan’s money, and the rail that carries the money out.

How fan-powered royalties split a fan’s money

Fan-powered royalties (FPR) are SoundCloud’s user-centric payment model, launched on 1 April 2021, as Hypebot’s Bruce Houghton reported at the time. A pooled, or pro-rata, model divides all revenue by total stream share. FPR sends each listener’s money only to the artists that listener plays.

According to SoundCloud’s help centre, three inputs set your share:

  • Listening time: the portion of a fan’s monthly listening spent on your music.
  • Ads and subscriptions: how many ads that fan heard, or whether they pay for SoundCloud Go+.
  • Revenue share: SoundCloud’s own cut, which it does not publish.

In practice, a fan who spends 40 percent of their month on you sends you 40 percent of the royalty money they generate, however many plays a superstar logs that month. Small, loyal fanbases do relatively better. Bot loops do worse: looping a track creates no new money.

Who is actually paid this way

SoundCloud says any artist monetising through SoundCloud for Artists is in FPR automatically, with no minimum stream count. Warner Music Group became the first major label to opt in, in July 2022, TechCrunch’s Amanda Silberling reported.

At launch, Hypebot noted that tracks delivered through third-party distributors such as CD Baby, TuneCore and DistroKid could not earn FPR. SoundCloud’s current pages still tie FPR to its own dashboard. Check which model your distributor’s SoundCloud deal pays on before assuming you are fan-powered.

The monetisation rules that catch people out:

  • A paid plan is required. The Artist tier allows 2 distributed and monetised tracks a month. Artist Pro is unlimited.
  • Length limits apply. Tracks must run between 30 seconds and 10 minutes.
  • DJ culture is excluded. DJ sets, mashups, unofficial covers and remixes cannot be monetised.
  • Nothing is automatic. You submit each track; review takes up to five business days.

The payout fee is the new commission

SoundCloud’s payout fee schedule lists these estimated charges per transfer:

  • US bank transfer (ACH): $0.50
  • Canadian bank transfer (EFT): $1.00
  • Local transfer in the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand or Hong Kong: $3.75
  • PayPal, where available: $3.75
  • SWIFT wire to 170 countries: $10
  • SWIFT wire to China or Ukraine: $25

Under SoundCloud’s payment rules, money is sent automatically once your balance reaches $25 after fees. On the smallest possible payout, that means:

  • US artist: $0.50 on $25.50 earned, about 2 percent.
  • Artist paid by SWIFT: $10 on $35 earned, about 29 percent.
  • Artist in China or Ukraine: $25 on $50 earned, half the money.

The fee is flat, so its share shrinks as payouts grow. On $210 earned, a $10 wire costs under 5 percent. The smallest earners outside cheap corridors pay the most.

What to do with your SoundCloud catalogue

Choose the cheapest rail you can receive on

Where PayPal accepts business payments in your country, $3.75 beats a $10 wire on every payout.

Give each track one monetising owner

If a distributor already delivers a track to SoundCloud, SoundCloud’s process is to approve your direct claim first, then have you ask the old distributor to transfer ownership.

Budget for the lag

New earners wait 45 to 60 days for first data. After that, reporting runs two months behind, so June plays pay out at the end of August.

Keep promotion clean

SoundCloud warns that Spotify charges distributors, SoundCloud included, a fee for each track flagged for artificial streams, and those fees may reduce your payouts.

Whichever distributor handles the rest of your catalogue, InterSpace Distribution included, ask it one question: who is the monetising owner of record on SoundCloud, and which royalty model does that deal pay?
