Spotify is introducing a conversational AI feature that allows Premium subscribers to request music, ask about tracks, and explore their listening history using natural language commands.

The tool, currently in beta, appears within the Home and Now Playing views on mobile. Users can type or speak to have a back-and-forth dialogue, adjusting playback, learning about songs and artists, and diving into podcasts or audiobooks without leaving the app.

How the Feature Works

Listeners can guide the music selection process with varying levels of specificity. Example commands include:

  • “Play some artists I haven’t heard before”
  • “Add some Bad Bunny followed by “just his recent stuff” or “make it more upbeat”
  • “Save this song,” “add this to my queue,” or “follow this artist”

From the Now Playing view, users can ask for context about a track, album, or artist, such as “What is the inspiration behind Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism?”, “When was this album released?”, or “What genre is this?” The system can then suggest related artists and sounds.

For podcasts and audiobooks, the feature can answer questions like “What other books has this author written?” or “What other podcasts has this guest been on?”

Personalized Listening Insights

The tool draws on a user’s playlists, favorite artists, repeat listens, and listening history to answer questions about individual taste. Queries such as “When did I first listen to this song?” or “What genres have I been into recently?” are supported.

Beta Availability

The conversational experience is rolling out gradually in beta to Premium subscribers aged 18 and over in the U.S., Ireland, and Sweden on iOS and Android devices, in English. As a beta, responses may not always be perfect, and Spotify says user feedback will directly shape future development.
