The Ivors Academy has urged the Irish government to support a parliamentary motion designed to shield artists’ copyright and income from the impact of artificial intelligence. The motion, filed by politician Aengus Ó Snodaigh, is scheduled for debate in the Dáil on 14 July.

The motion calls for measures “to protect the copyright and incomes of artists, to ensure no state funding for art is spent on content produced by AI, and to place the creative sector at the heart of decision-making when it comes to AI policy,” according to Ó Snodaigh.

The Ivors Academy, which represents songwriters and composers, welcomed the motion and asked the government to support it. CEO Roberto Neri said: “This is an important milestone for songwriters and composers in Ireland which demonstrates the value of creators, industry partners and policymakers working together to protect the rights and livelihoods of Irish writers.”

Earlier this month, Neri wrote to the Taoiseach calling on the government to use its presidency of the Council of the European Union to press these issues in Brussels. Catherine Martin, Ivors Academy head of policy, Ireland, said: “Ireland has an opportunity to lead the conversation on creators’ rights during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and we hope this motion builds momentum for meaningful, practical action.”
