The Jazz at Jozi Gold series will present performances by saxophonist Linda Sikhakhane and singer Vusi Mahlasela on consecutive Saturdays in July, continuing the musical programme at the former Orbit jazz club at 81 De Korte Street in Braamfontein.
Venue and neighbourhood revival
The space, once home to the celebrated Orbit club, now hosts weekly Saturday night jazz shows under the Jozi Gold Brewing Company. Braamfontein itself declined during the 1990s and early 2000s before undergoing a renewal that transformed it into a creative precinct bordering Wits University, with galleries, design studios, markets and independent cultural spaces.
Earlier in July, trumpeter Sydney Mavundla performed at the venue as part of the ongoing series.
July lineup
On Saturday, 18 July, Linda Sikhakhane returns to the stage where he first led a band nearly a decade ago, when the address was still The Orbit. Now signed to Blue Note / Universal Music Africa, the saxophonist and composer will offer an exclusive preview of material from his forthcoming fifth album, LINDA.
On Saturday, 25 July, Vusi Mahlasela will perform. Known as “The Voice,” Mahlasela has spent more than three decades performing internationally, with appearances alongside Sting, Paul Simon, Dave Matthews Band, Hugh Masekela and Angélique Kidjo. His set will include songs from his upcoming album, Questions and Answers, as well as selections from his catalogue.
Legacy and continuation
Spokesperson Gynis Jardine said: “One of the reasons this series has resonated with audiences is because people understand the significance of this room. The Orbit played such an important role in South African jazz, and we’re incredibly proud that the music continues to live here. Every Saturday we’re honouring that legacy while introducing new audiences to some of the finest artists this country has produced.”
The Jazz at Jozi Gold series is scheduled to continue throughout 2026.
