Spotify has made its managed accounts feature available to families on any plan, including the free tier, in six countries. The feature, previously exclusive to Premium Family subscribers, provides a separate, controlled listening space for children aged 13 and under.

The expansion applies to the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Managed accounts were already accessible on Premium Family plans in 16 markets, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Denmark, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden.

Parental Controls and Features

Managed accounts include several default restrictions and adjustable settings:

  • Private profiles: Accounts are not searchable or discoverable by other users.
  • Explicit content filter: Automatically enabled, blocking tracks marked as explicit by rights holders.
  • No purchasing: In-app purchases and features like Messages are disabled.
  • Video and Canvas off: Short looping visuals are deactivated to keep the experience focused on listening.
  • Customizable controls: Parents can block specific tracks or artists through the Parental Controls settings page.

Young listeners receive personalized recommendations, including Made for You mixes and daylist, and get their own annual Wrapped recap. Free-tier accounts will hear ads, which may include tips on using the app.

How to Set Up a Managed Account

Parents can create a managed account by opening the Spotify mobile app, tapping their profile icon, and selecting Add account then Create a managed account. The setup process guides them through choosing a display name and content preferences, with the option to adjust settings at any time.

Spotify provides a dedicated managed accounts homepage and parental guide for more information. The company said it plans to bring managed accounts to additional countries in the future.
