Instagram has rolled out a new feature that lets users swap the music attached to published posts and carousels without needing to delete and re-upload the content. The Replace Audio tool preserves all existing likes, comments, shares, and other engagement data, addressing a long-standing limitation that forced creators to remove and republish posts just to change a soundtrack.
To use the tool, users open the post they want to edit, tap the two-line menu in the top-right corner, select “Edit,” and choose the option to change the audio. The update brings Instagram’s functionality closer to that of YouTube, which already allows creators to replace music in videos and Shorts without removing the original content.
The feature arrives as Instagram continues to refine its creator tools, following several recent updates that drew mixed reactions. Earlier this year, the platform briefly offered an artificial intelligence-powered option to modify photos from public accounts, but removed it within a week after user criticism. In May, Instagram launched Instants, a format for sharing real-time moments, which prompted confusion and accidental sharing with entire friends lists, leading to further user pushback.
The new audio replacement tool gives creators and brands more flexibility to manage published content, particularly when copyright issues affect a post’s original music, without sacrificing accumulated engagement or reach.
