IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) announced the Streaming Integrity Initiative (SII) on September 14, 2026, establishing common practices to prevent, detect and respond to streaming fraud.

The initiative focuses on music distributors, whose role as a gateway to digital music services enables them to stop fraudulent content before it reaches streaming platforms.

Common practices for distributors

The SII sets out five core commitments intended to strengthen prevention, improve detection, support enforcement and increase collaboration across the music industry.

Streaming fraud involves manipulating digital music services to generate revenue from illegitimate plays. It diverts income from artists, songwriters and rights holders and undermines trust in streaming services.

Its effects extend to record labels, music publishers and other participants in the music economy.

Building on End Streaming Fraud

The initiative builds on End Streaming Fraud, a broader campaign launched by IFPI and major music companies to raise awareness of streaming fraud across the music industry.

Victoria Oakley, IFPI’s chief executive officer, said: “Streaming fraud deceives fans and deprives legitimate artists and songwriters of income that should rightfully reach them. This is theft, pure and simple.”

She added: “We welcome the leadership shown by the first distributors to publicly support the Streaming Integrity Initiative and hope this leads to direct, effective and coordinated action to protect artists, songwriters and fans against streaming fraud.”
