Korea Is the World’s No. 7 Music Market. YouTube Music Passed Melon, but Melon Still Decides Who Charts.

South Korea is the world’s No. 7 music market, and in 2025 YouTube Music passed Melon as its most-used app. But Melon still decides who charts. Here is why a Korean release needs delivery to the domestic DSPs distributors skip and the global platforms.

Korea’s streaming market flipped, and most distributors missed the flip

South Korea is the world’s seventh-largest recorded music market, per IFPI’s Global Music Report 2026. IFPI means the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, the body that counts the money.

For two decades that market ran on Melon. In 2025 it does not.

YouTube Music closed 2025 as Korea’s most-used music app with roughly 9.8 million monthly active users, according to Wiseapp data reported by Digital Today. MAU means monthly active users. Melon sat second at 6.34 million.

The gap is not an accident. YouTube Music first passed Melon in December 2023 and has not looked back.

The domestic platforms are shrinking

Domestic music streaming usage fell 5% in 2025 from the year before, the sixth straight year of decline since 2019, per a KOCCA report cited by Seoul Economic Daily.

Melon has been stuck around 7 million users for years. The rest of the home team is smaller and sliding:

  • Melon: 6.34 million MAU
  • Spotify: 3.85 million
  • Genie Music: 2.57 million
  • FLO: 1.73 million
  • Naver VIBE and Bugs: under a million each

DSP means digital service provider. Korea has more of them that matter than almost any market on earth, and most global distributors deliver to only two or three.

Melon still decides who counts

Here is the trap. Reach lives on YouTube Music. Legitimacy still lives on Melon.

Melon’s chart is what Korean media, TV music shows, and year-end award eligibility track. An act can pull huge YouTube numbers and still read as absent at home if it never lands on Melon, Genie, and FLO.

That split is why a Western-only delivery footprint quietly caps a Korean release. Spotify plus Apple Music plus YouTube covers the reach story and none of the legitimacy story.

Retention is the number nobody prints

The MAU race hides a second signal. Return rate, the share of users who come back month over month, tells you where listening actually sticks.

For the December window, Wiseapp put Spotify first at 82.3%, up 14.6 points year over year. Melon and Genie tied at 81.4%. FLO sat at 74.5% and YouTube Music at 74%, per Digital Today.

Translation: YouTube Music wins the crowd, but the domestic platforms hold the committed listener. For a catalog that earns on repeat plays, that engaged base on Melon is not a rounding error.

What this means for a self-releasing Korean artist

The playbook is not “pick a winner.” It is “cover both games at once.”

  • Deliver to Melon, Genie, FLO, Bugs, and VIBE for the domestic chart and award path
  • Deliver to YouTube Music, Spotify, and Apple Music for reach and export
  • Keep metadata identical across all of them so the domestic chart and the global chart credit the same release

Most distributors built for the US market treat Korean DSPs as an afterthought or skip them outright. That is the coverage gap.

Where InterSpace fits

InterSpace Distribution delivers DDEX-native to Korea’s domestic DSPs alongside the global platforms, in one release. DDEX means Digital Data Exchange, the messaging standard that keeps your credits and splits intact from delivery through payout.

For a Korean release that has to satisfy the Melon chart and the YouTube Music algorithm in the same week, one pipeline that reaches both is the difference between charting at home and only trending abroad. Splits settle transparently through wallet.interspace.ink, so a feature-heavy K-release does not turn into a payout argument.

The Korean market did not shrink. It moved. The distributors that noticed are the ones still on the chart.
