Nairobi Is Africa’s Youngest Streaming City. Its Money Splits Between Spotify and Boomplay.

Nairobi is now Africa’s youngest streaming city, with Gen Z driving 53.7% of Spotify streams and Kenyans logging 203 million hours in 2025. But East Africa’s biggest numbers live on Boomplay and Audiomack, the platforms most distributors still skip. Here is what that means for artists.

In June 2026, Spotify’s Greasy Tunes Nairobi report put a number on something East African labels already felt. Gen Z listeners aged 18 to 24 accounted for 53.7% of all Spotify streams in Nairobi, higher than Lagos at 44.4% and Johannesburg at 29.9%, according to data reported by Citizen Digital.

That is not a soft cultural signal. It is a demographic that streams at noon, streams through the small hours, and treats podcasts as a native format with an audience 2.5 times larger than Lagos.

The Volume Is Real, and So Is the Local Tilt

Kenyans streamed more than 203 million hours of music on Spotify in 2025, per figures marking the platform’s fifth year in the market, reported by The East African Business Times. The average Kenyan user played 124 different artists a month.

The catalog behind that number is going local. Between 2021 and 2025, local-language listening grew 101%, the number of Kenyan artists on Spotify rose 112%, and Amapiano streams climbed more than 1,400%.

Genre momentum in the last year tells the same story. Citizen Digital reported dancehall up 95%, Bongo Flava up 75%, Gengetone up 48%, and gospel up 37% year on year.

But Spotify Is Only Half the East African Map

Here is what a Spotify-only read misses. The region’s biggest streaming numbers do not live on Spotify.

Boomplay, the TECNO-backed platform with offices in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Lagos and Accra, is where East African scale actually shows up. Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz became the first East African artist to pass 400 million Boomplay streams, per The Citizen.

He is not alone in Boomplay’s Golden Club. Zuchu and Rayvanny sit at 300 million streams each, Mbosso and Jay Melody at 200 million, Nandy and Alikiba at 100 million. On Audiomack, Diamond has logged 141 million plays.

Compare that with his Spotify count in the same reporting, which was still measured in single-digit millions. For a Bongo Flava or Gengetone artist, Boomplay and Audiomack are not secondary. They are the home market.

Why This Is a Distribution Problem, Not a Marketing One

A DSP, or digital service provider, is any platform that licenses and streams your music. The gap for East African artists is that most global distributors deliver to a short list: Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Amazon, Deezer.

That list routes an artist’s music away from where their own audience streams. Boomplay, Audiomack and Anghami sit outside the default delivery path at several majors-focused distributors.

The cost is not just reach. It is money. Every platform an artist skips is a royalty line that never opens, and a fan who has to find the music somewhere the artist earns nothing.

The Practical Takeaway

For a Nairobi or Dar es Salaam artist deciding where to distribute, three questions matter:

  • Does the distributor deliver to Boomplay and Audiomack, not just Spotify and Apple?
  • Does it report those royalties transparently, split by collaborator, so a feature-heavy Bongo Flava track pays everyone correctly?
  • Does it deliver via DDEX, the Digital Data Exchange standard DSPs use for clean metadata, so a track is not rejected or mislabeled on smaller platforms?

InterSpace Distribution built its delivery around exactly that gap. East African audiences are already streaming at Lagos-and-beyond volume. The only question is whether the artist is collecting on every platform they are streaming on, or just the two everyone remembers.
