A free exhibition documenting the legacy of Spiral Tribe and 1990s free party culture will open in East London this September, bringing together original members of the sound system collective for a four-day programme of talks, workshops, and live sessions.
Developed with input from six former Spiral Tribe members, the Unmasked Presents Spiral Tribe exhibition runs from 16 to 19 September at REinsTate in Silvertown. The event offers what organisers describe as “a rare exploration into the archives, images, visual language, and countercultural legacy” of the collective.
The programme includes panel discussions, screenings, interviews, and live performances. The week concludes on Saturday evening, 19 September, with an “SP23” rave at Distillery N17, featuring Spiral Tribe crew members alongside Unmasked residents.
Admission to the exhibition is free throughout the week. Workshops and evening events require tickets and have limited capacity. A full schedule and further details will be announced in the coming months.
In 2023, a separate exhibition about Spiral Tribe, titled Music, Magic and Mayhem, was held in Zurich’s Gewerbeschule district. Last year, director Aaron Trinder released the documentary Free Party: A Folk History, which paired previously unseen archival footage with first-hand accounts from participants in the movement.
