The Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC) has launched Music Registration 101: Registering Your Music, a free online micro-course explaining music rights registration and royalty collection. It covers how registration helps royalties reach the appropriate rightsholders.
Intended for music creators, current and aspiring industry professionals, and others, the course examines registration across organizations involved in copyright, publishing administration and distribution.
Course format and credentials
The course is also part of The MLC’s Member Benefits program, which gives members access to educational tools and resources supporting their careers.
- Completion takes approximately three hours.
- Each section includes an optional quiz.
- Participants receive a personalized completion certificate for academic or professional use.
- A digital badge is available to participants who take the optional final assessment and score 80% or higher.
Serona Elton, Head of Educational Partnerships at The MLC, described the course’s purpose:
“The MLC is focused on making sure rightsholders get paid, while also helping them understand how the ecosystem works,” said Elton. “This course breaks down complex concepts into clear, practical information so rightsholders can take meaningful steps in managing their careers and ensuring they receive the royalties they’ve earned.”
A second free micro-course
Music Registration 101 is one of two free micro-courses currently available from The MLC.
The other, The MLC 101: Introduction to The MLC, covers the organization, mechanical licensing and mechanical royalties. Its topics include the Music Modernization Act, membership and the administration of mechanical royalties in the digital music landscape.
