Grammy-winning artist Tyla will host an A*POP Takeover at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg on Sunday, 16 August, marking a homecoming celebration tied to her second studio album.
The event is presented in partnership with South African Tourism and powered by Absa. A TikTok campaign will give fans, known as Tygers, the chance to attend by creating videos set to songs from A*POP. South African Tourism will provide transport for selected participants from across Gauteng.
Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille praised the singer’s authenticity. “Tyla has always been authentic in her work. A daughter of the African soil and an advocate for South Africa. I agree with her, that you must visit South Africa to understand its beauty and its people,” de Lille said.
Released on 24 July, A*POP is a 14-track project that fuses pop, R&B, amapiano rhythms and house music with South African cultural elements. The album features collaborations with MaWhoo, Babalwa M, Liquideep and Swedish singer Zara Larsson.
The album debuted at No. 43 on the Billboard 200 with 16,666 first-week units, reached No. 5 on the Top R&B Albums chart, and hit No. 1 on the World Albums chart. Tyla is the only African artist to have topped the World Albums chart with multiple projects. She has also spent more than 100 weeks at No. 1 on the US Afrobeats Songs chart and holds the record for the most chart-toppers on that list.
“Whenever I’m home, I feel like myself again. I love being surrounded by my people and my fans, it reminds me where I come from,” Tyla said.
The TikTok campaign invites fans to create videos using any track from A*POP. Selected creators will receive tickets to the Gold Reef City event, offering a direct way for supporters to join the album’s homecoming celebration.
The Johannesburg takeover follows Tyla’s expansion from a local breakthrough to international recognition, with her music continuing to draw on South African influences.
