Jermaine Dupri and Jacquees are facing a copyright infringement lawsuit over their 2023 song Pick It Up, filed in Florida federal court by the brothers behind the hip-hop duo Home Team.
Patrick Watler and Van J. Watler say they released a track with the same title about 35 years ago. Their complaint alleges the newer Pick It Up incorporated "the protectable elements of the" older title, specifically "protectable lyrics and melody/harmony," without authorization.
The alleged overlap centers on the choruses, both of which feature the phrase "pick it up." The plaintiffs state Dupri and Jacquees "never sought" approval and "failed to compensate" them "in anyway whatsoever."
The filing also notes that the plaintiffs may add defendants or move to amend the counts if additional claims emerge.
Recent music litigation costs
In September, Lady Gaga and Universal Music requested more than $230,000 in attorneys’ fees from surf brand Lost International in a trademark dispute. That request is on hold while Lost International pursues a Ninth Circuit appeal after the case was dismissed with prejudice.
Bad Bunny also reportedly incurred legal costs defending an Enséñame Bailar copyright suit. A separate Frankenstein reggaeton action continues despite a summary judgment setback, with legal costs for Bad Bunny and other defendants.
