Mike Love has sustained the Beach Boys’ concert presence through a career that also includes writing lyrics and singing lead on many of their biggest hits.

His work helped give voice to the California lifestyle depicted in the band’s songs, while his pursuit of songwriting credit became a source of public controversy.

Songwriting and California imagery

Brian Wilson developed the group’s music through an interest in vocal harmony and increasingly ambitious recordings. Love supplied lyrics for many of the songs, contributing to their depictions of California life.

The band’s music presented sunshine, outdoor recreation and youthful freedom to audiences far beyond the state. That imagery accompanied California’s postwar expansion, as former soldiers settled there and aerospace employment grew.

Love later sued to secure recognition for his songwriting contributions. The dispute contributed to negative perceptions of him, even as his voice remained central to the group’s best-known recordings.

Success across changing musical eras

The Beach Boys continued to have hits during the British Invasion. Their subsequent releases included Pet Sounds and “Good Vibrations,” followed by songs such as “Darlin’” and “Do It Again.”

As rock shifted toward longer recordings and FM (frequency modulation) radio, the group continued making albums. Its first Warner Bros. album lacked an AM (amplitude modulation) radio hit but explored contemporary musical and lyrical themes.

Further albums followed in the early 1970s. The 1974 compilation Endless Summer then renewed interest in the band’s earlier recordings, after it had already rebuilt its live audience to arena scale.

Love’s continuing concert role

Wilson’s involvement with the group changed over the following decades, including periods away and later returns to performing. Love continued presenting the band’s repertoire in concert.

With the Wilson brothers deceased, Love and Al Jardine remain surviving members of the group’s early lineup.
