Warner Music India is expanding its South Indian music business through the acquisition of Gemini Music and agreements with filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon and Malayalam film company Magic Frames. The deals add existing soundtracks to its catalog and broaden its pipeline of releases.
Catalog acquisition and release agreements
The exclusive, long-term agreement with Menon covers both previous and future releases. Warner Music India has also partnered with Magic Frames, which operates in Malayalam film production and distribution.
Warner Music India and Divo are jointly investing in existing catalogs and long-term partnerships across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada music. Their regional operations connect with Warner Music’s international network.
Tamil soundtracks join the repertoire
The Gemini Music acquisition adds Tamil film soundtracks including:
- Thalapathy Vijay’s Nanban and Thuppakki.
- Dhanush’s Mayakkam Enna.
- Suriya’s Singam 2.
- Bala’s Paradesi.
The catalog includes scores by composers Harris Jayaraj, G.V. Prakash Kumar and Devi Sri Prasad.
Regional investment priorities
Jay Mehta identified South India’s regional markets as central to the company’s music business in India. He said the acquisitions and creative agreements would support international distribution of regional soundtracks and artists.
Mehta is managing director for recorded music and publishing in India and SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation).
Ashok Parwani, Warner Music India’s head of music for South India, said film soundtracks continue to reach new audiences after their initial release. He said the partnerships support investment in future releases alongside the existing repertoire.
