The owners of Elvis Presley’s song catalog have sued Anthropic for copyright infringement, alleging it trained its Claude language model on 274 songs associated with the singer without permission.

The lawsuit joins a growing number of claims by music rights holders challenging artificial intelligence (AI) companies over the unauthorized use of lyrics and recordings as training material.

The dispute will test the application of existing copyright law to large language models whose training draws partly on copyrighted musical works.
