Korean Streaming Song Royalties Take at Least Five Months. Check the IPI Before Release.

Korean streaming song royalties take at least five months from service start, KOMCA says. Foreign co-writers affiliated with overseas societies need an IPI number on the Korean work registration. Here is the pre-release checklist that separates composition claims from master payments.

A Korean streaming release can be earning master income while its songwriters still see nothing on a composition statement. The Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) says royalties for transmission services are distributed within three months after it receives usage data from the service, and that the interval from service start to distribution is at least five months. A missing payment in month two is therefore not, by itself, proof of a failed claim. KOMCA sets out both intervals in its FAQ.

The more urgent question is whether every writer can be identified when the usage arrives. For a Korean work with an overseas co-writer who belongs to a foreign copyright society, KOMCA says the registration must include that writer’s Interested Party Information (IPI) number. That small field is the difference between a named claimant and a credit that needs investigating.

Two timelines, two sets of data

KOMCA licenses and distributes income for musical works across uses including on-demand streaming, downloads and broadcasting. A distributor’s recording statement follows the master; the KOMCA process follows the composition. KOMCA’s rights overview lists these categories separately, while the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) says an International Standard Recording Code (ISRC) identifies a recording, not the underlying work.

That distinction matters when an artist owns both rights. A correctly delivered ISRC helps account for the recording, but it does not replace the song registration or its writer identities. Comparing a distributor payment date with a KOMCA payment date as though they were one pipeline creates a false alarm.

The five-month figure is a floor, not a guaranteed payday. KOMCA’s three-month clock begins after it obtains distribution data from the service. If a writer is paid through a society outside Korea, the cross-border accounting adds another handoff; KOMCA describes reciprocal societies sending both money and work-use information to the receiving society. Its FAQ says incoming foreign royalties are distributed quarterly, but that is a separate flow and should not be used as a fixed estimate for a foreign writer’s Korean income.

Check the writer identity before delivery

Ask every co-writer for their legal name, society affiliation, IPI number, role and agreed percentage before the release is scheduled. The IPI system is maintained for the global identification of people and companies with interests in works, according to the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC). A stage name or a screenshot of an artist profile is not an equivalent identifier.

Then compare the signed split sheet with the registration submitted by the Korean co-writer or publisher and the registration at each foreign writer’s home society. KOMCA says a domestic publisher contracted with a foreign writer can register the work, and a work made only by foreign writers can be registered through a Korean subpublisher. Its registration FAQ also asks for evidence of publication: for a digital single or EP, this includes a page showing the lyricist, composer and arranger credits, the full lyrics and audio.

Keep one version of the title and writer credits across label copy, the Korean service listing and society filings. After release, note the first service date, the date usage appears in a statement and the registration reference. If a payment is still absent after the relevant reporting cycle, those records give the society or publisher a specific work and period to investigate.

The distribution decision

A label selecting Korean digital services should ask its distributor for clean recording delivery and readable, track-level reporting, then name the person responsible for composition registration. Our KOMCA guide explains the wider collection route; our Korean streaming split explainer covers the master-side economics. The practical rule is simpler: register the song with the right IPI numbers before measuring a writer’s royalty lag.
