South African vocal group The Joy have released a new single, “Precious,” marking a deliberate pivot toward English-language songwriting and a polished global pop sound, with production by Grammy-winning producer P2J.
Bilingual Shift and Global Production
The track, which blends English and isiZulu lyrics, is the KwaZulu-Natal five-piece’s first release to feature predominantly English vocals. P2J, known for his work with Beyoncé, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Tems, brings a contemporary pop sheen that still leaves room for the group’s layered harmonies. The result is a sound that bridges African vocal tradition and modern global pop.
Lyrical Theme and Visual Rollout
Lyrically, “Precious” centres on love and commitment, delivered through the group’s signature harmonised style. A visualiser released alongside the single offers a simple, expressive visual interpretation of the song’s mood, supporting a digital-first rollout aimed at streaming audiences.
International Rise and Digital Growth
The Joy first gained attention with the viral single “Isencane Lengane” and the 2021 EP “Amabutho.” Since then, they have performed on platforms such as The Jennifer Hudson Show and Later… with Jools Holland, and drawn public support from artists including Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Alicia Keys, Sam Smith and Jennifer Hudson. Collaborations with Doja Cat and The Blessed Madonna, as well as a feature on Jennifer Hudson’s Christmas album The Gift of Love, have further expanded their reach. A performance with Doja Cat at the Global Citizen Africa event added to their live milestones. The group has more than one million followers on TikTok.
Roots in KwaZulu-Natal
Despite their international activity, The Joy remain anchored in the traditional vocal harmonies of their home province. “Precious” reflects their ongoing effort to balance cultural authenticity with global accessibility, a defining characteristic of their career.
