Deezer has introduced Remix Lab, an in-app feature that lets fans create authorised remixes of songs, with royalties flowing to artists and rights holders. The tool launched on 25 June in France.

How Remix Lab Works

Users can access Remix Lab through participating artists’ pages within the Deezer app. The editing suite allows adjustments to tempo, reverb, and broader stylistic and genre elements, without relying on artificial intelligence (AI) generation.

Unlike some rival platforms’ AI-driven remix tools, Deezer’s feature emphasises manual editing controls. The initial catalogue includes tracks from French artists, among them Celine Dion.

Artist Consent and Revenue

Deezer said that all remixes are created with the approval of the relevant artists and rights holders. Streams of the user-modified versions will generate royalties for those rights holders.

CEO Alexis Lanternier stated:

“This remix tool perfectly embodies our vision of offering a product that enriches the listening experience for fans by allowing them to participate in the creative process and create a deeper connection with their favourite music directly in the Deezer app. True to our DNA, these features are made possible with full participation of the artists, fully respecting rights, and maximising earnings for each track.”

Deezer’s Broader AI Stance

The launch coincides with a wider industry push into AI-powered features and user-generated content. Deezer has differentiated itself by prioritising authorised remixing and artist control.

Earlier this year, the company deployed detection technology to identify AI-generated tracks on its platform and has licensed these tools to other businesses. Deezer also excludes AI-generated music from its editorial playlists and, in certain cases, from algorithmic recommendations.

Availability

Remix Lab is currently limited to users in France. Deezer has not provided a timeline for a wider rollout but confirmed plans to bring the feature to additional markets in the future.
