Deezer has launched Remix Lab, a new feature that lets users create authorized remixes of songs directly within its app. Announced on 25 June, the tool is initially available in France and includes tracks from several French artists, among them Celine Dion.

Remix Lab provides in-app editing controls that allow listeners to adjust tempo, reverb, and other stylistic elements. Unlike some rival services that rely on artificial intelligence (AI) to generate remixes, Deezer’s feature focuses on manual editing. Artists and rights holders receive royalties from streams of the remixed versions.

Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer, said the feature aims to deepen fan engagement while preserving creative control for artists. “This remix tool perfectly embodies our vision of offering a product that enriches the listening experience for fans by allowing them to participate in the creative process and create a deeper connection with their favourite music directly in the Deezer app,” Lanternier said. “True to our DNA, these features are made possible with full participation of artists, fully respecting rights, and maximising earnings for each track.”

Deezer has taken a distinct approach to user-generated content and AI-generated music. Earlier this year, the company introduced technology to detect AI-generated tracks on streaming platforms and has made some of those detection tools available for licensing. It also excludes AI-generated music from its editorial playlists and, in certain cases, from recommendation algorithms.

The company has not provided a timeline for expanding Remix Lab beyond France, but said it plans to make the feature available in additional markets in the future.
