South African fusion artist Umzulu Phaqa has released her debut album, Volume 1, a project that merges contemporary pop with African storytelling. The record follows the singles Thakatha Njalo and Unlimited Budget, expanding on the sound introduced in those tracks.
Across the album, pop structures are stretched and reimagined, moving between experimental textures and moments of vulnerability while remaining anchored in themes of purpose, faith, and identity. The track Unlimited Budget has emerged as a focal point, built around the refrain “Owami uNkulunkulu une Unlimited Budget,” a gospel-pop declaration of divine provision rather than material wealth.
Umzulu Phaqa draws on the unflinching honesty of Brenda Fassie, the commanding stage presence of Lebo Mathosa, and the polished, hook-driven songcraft of global pop. These elements are woven into a distinctly African foundation, resulting in a sound the artist describes as “controlled chaos,” where playful, unpredictable experimentation retains emotional clarity.
