GEMA, the German performance rights organization, has launched PLAI, a licensable dataset of music for AI training, containing 178,000 audio files and data from 57,000 works.
The dataset, which evolved from proposals first outlined in September 2024, includes contributions from music publishers and production music companies such as Bailer Music Publishing, Earmotion Audio Creation, Intervox Production Music, Music Sculptor, and Sonoton. GEMA plans to add more rightsholders as PLAI grows.
Its first commercial client is German firm Klangio, which offers an AI-powered tool for converting audio to sheet music.
The launch comes ahead of an anticipated ruling in GEMA’s copyright lawsuit against AI company Suno, scheduled for July 31 at the Munich Regional Court. Thomas Theune, GEMA’s director of broadcasting and online, said: “We are demonstrating that AI training and fair compensation for creative professionals are not mutually exclusive. If both sides are interested in responsible collaboration, we can find common solutions and enable innovation on a reliable legal foundation.”
