On Sunday 21 June, Asake took the stage at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane for a Spotify-presented “One Night Only” concert, delivering a performance that traced his artistic evolution from prophetic breakout hits to a present defined by gratitude and opulence.
The 2,300-capacity theatre, typically a setting for reserved appreciation, became a dancefloor as the Nigerian star performed tracks from his 2026 album ‘M$NEY’ alongside fan favourites, backed by a full live band, choir and backing vocalists.
A Catalogue Reimagined Through Live Arrangement
Asake opened the set with an unreleased track that shared the thematic and sonic DNA of ‘M$NEY,’ his vocals cutting cleanly through the room. The audience responded with immediate recognition to songs such as “Wa,” “Why Love,” and “Forgiveness,” greeting opening chords with roars and singing along at full volume.
The live instrumentation brought fresh dimension to the material, communicating emotional nuances that the artist suggested do not always translate in digital formats. The onstage ensemble matched the energy with animated choreography, while Asake himself moved with a calm, assured confidence, a quality described in Yoruba as itutu, marking a departure from the high-octane stage presence of his early career.
Visual Narrative and Artistic Metamorphosis
Costume changes throughout the night reinforced a sense of transformation. Asake began in a leather two-piece with subtle diamond embellishments on the collar, later shifting to a waistcoat and trousers before emerging in a dazzling gold top. The progression mirrored the arc of a setlist that contextualised ‘M$NEY’ as a project exploring love, affirmation and thanksgiving.
A Prophecy Fulfilled
The performance drew a direct line from Asake’s 2022 breakout to the present. His debut album ‘Mr Money With The Vibe’ opened with earnest prayers on “Dull,” asking not to stumble as he ascended. Four years later, standing centre stage at Drury Lane with arms outstretched as the crowd sang the lyrics to “Worship,” the moment read as an expression of gratitude for answered prayers.
Asake’s journey has included sold-out shows at London’s O2 Arena in 2023 and New York’s Madison Square Garden in 2024, a joint EP with Wizkid, and a Red Bull Symphonic performance in Brooklyn. His Drury Lane appearance joins a series of Afrobeats showcases in historically significant venues, including Adekunle Gold at the Royal Festival Hall and Fireboy DML at the Royal Albert Hall.
Throughout the night, Asake’s performance framed ‘M$NEY’ as an offering of thanksgiving, embodying the simplicity of gratitude amid the pursuit of success.
