Believe and TuneCore artists will be able to choose whether to participate in Spotify’s upcoming AI (artificial intelligence) remix tool under an agreement announced October 20. Spotify plans to sell access as an add-on for Premium subscribers, with streams earning royalties for participating artists and rights holders.
The companies describe the tool as a way to create remixes and covers of existing songs, rather than entirely new works. Every remix will connect listeners to the original recording and artist.
Two separate consent decisions
Participation will require two decisions from artists and labels. They must first agree to be considered for AI programs, then review information about the Spotify partnership and separately decide whether to join it.
Opting to receive information about AI opportunities will not enroll an artist in the remix tool.
The companies say the agreement follows Believe’s four principles for responsible AI:
- Consent
- Control
- Compensation
- Transparency
They also cite work to tackle spam, impersonation and misleading AI content on streaming services.
Pricing and royalty terms undisclosed
Fan-created versions of songs already circulate widely online, frequently without compensating the original creators. Spotify and Believe propose a licensed option that could generate income and help listeners discover the original music, while allowing artists to decide whether their recordings are included.
The announcement does not disclose a launch date, the Premium add-on price, royalty rates or the allocation of revenue.
