Green hydrogen powered major stages at two English festivals this August, moving the technology beyond backstage support and into main-stage production.
Outdoor music festivals require large amounts of temporary electricity for sound systems, lighting rigs, video walls, catering, bars, campsites and production offices. Many sites lack a permanent grid connection. For most of live music history, diesel generators have filled that role because they are portable and dependable, but they are also noisy, polluting and hard to reconcile with the industry’s stated emissions goals.
Main-Stage Deployments
At Boomtown Festival in England this August, green-hydrogen fuel cells powered the 20,000-capacity HYDRO XL stage. Artists including Skrillex, Four Tet, Floating Points and Groove Armada performed there. The festival introduced a smaller hydrogen-powered stage in 2025 and expanded the experiment this year.
Later that month, FORWARDS Festival in Bristol used green hydrogen to power its main stage, while mobile batteries charged with renewable energy handled other parts of the site. Lorde, Little Simz, Tems and Wet Leg performed across the weekend as part of a publicly supported clean-power trial intended to reduce diesel use.
These were not entirely hydrogen-powered festivals, but they mark a shift from powering a backstage office or food vendor to running production infrastructure beneath major artists.
How Green Hydrogen Works
Hydrogen is not automatically clean. Most hydrogen is still produced using fossil fuels. Green hydrogen is made differently: renewable electricity from wind or solar splits water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis.
That hydrogen can be stored, transported to a festival and fed into a fuel cell that converts it back into electricity. At the point of use, a fuel-cell generator produces water and heat rather than carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides or particulate pollution. It is also much quieter than a diesel generator, which may be noticeable backstage even when audiences have no idea what is powering the show.
A Growing Run of Festival Trials
Green hydrogen has been moving through the festival circuit for several years. Recent deployments include:
- HebCelt in Scotland used locally produced green hydrogen to power its Islands Stage for three days in 2022, supporting 12 acts, and returned to the system the following year.
- Rock for People in the Czech Republic began experimenting with a hydrogen-powered stage in 2021 and has since combined hydrogen with solar and other alternative energy sources.
- Big Church Festival used green hydrogen for its main stage in 2024. Supplier GeoPura estimated the switch prevented approximately 5.7 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
- Latitude used green hydrogen for medical and welfare facilities, merchandise, VIP camping and its recycling hub in 2024.
- Isle of Wight Festival used green hydrogen the same year to power artist and crew catering and part of its guest village.
That patchwork of experiments may be more revealing than any claim that one festival has suddenly solved sustainable power. Organizers are learning where green hydrogen works, how much fuel they need and which pieces of festival infrastructure can move away from diesel without risking a blackout in the middle of a headline set.
Limits and Practical Use
Green hydrogen is not a perfect solution. Producing, compressing and transporting it requires energy, and converting electricity into hydrogen and then back into electricity creates efficiency losses. If a festival can connect directly to a renewable grid, that is generally the simpler option. Batteries can also be more efficient for shorter, predictable periods of demand.
Hydrogen becomes particularly relevant when an event requires continuous, high-capacity power at a temporary or remote location. Unlike a battery, a hydrogen system can keep operating as long as more fuel is delivered. That makes it a potential replacement for the large generators festivals have historically been reluctant to surrender.
The greener festival of the future will probably not run on one single technology. It might use a permanent grid connection for the main site, batteries for predictable loads, solar installations where practical and green hydrogen for stages or production areas that require uninterrupted off-grid power.
For promoters, the first step may be less futuristic: accurately measuring how much electricity an event actually consumes. Oversized generators frequently burn fuel while supplying only a fraction of their available capacity. Better energy planning can reduce emissions before a new piece of equipment even arrives.
Still, the appearance of green hydrogen on increasingly large stages matters. Festival sustainability has often been presented through visible changes aimed at audiences, such as reusable cups, recycling stations, water refill points and public-transit campaigns. Hydrogen addresses something deeper in the machinery of the event. Fans may never see the generators powering the show.
