Lira and Nomfundo Moh will headline the Old Mutual Music at the Lake concert at Durban Botanic Gardens on Sunday, 9 August 2026, marking National Women’s Day and the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March.

The outdoor event brings together two generations of South African female artists for an afternoon of live music and historical commemoration.

A milestone anniversary

The 2026 edition commemorates seven decades since more than 20,000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 9 August 1956 to protest the extension of the Pass Laws. That peaceful demonstration became a defining moment in the struggle against apartheid and remains a symbol of courage and unity. National Women’s Day honours those women and recognises the ongoing contributions of women across all sectors of society.

Lira’s return to the stage

The concert will feature Lira in one of her most significant appearances since recovering from a stroke she suffered in 2022. Her recent Still Here performances have centred on themes of hope, perseverance and resilience, drawing audiences who celebrate both her musical talent and her recovery journey. Her set at the Durban Botanic Gardens is expected to be an emotional highlight of the National Women’s Day programme.

Nomfundo Moh joins the lineup

Chart-topping singer-songwriter Nomfundo Moh will share the stage, bringing a contemporary voice rooted in personal storytelling. Her work explores love, identity and everyday experiences, earning her widespread acclaim and a loyal following. The pairing of Lira and Nomfundo Moh highlights both established excellence and emerging influence within South Africa’s music industry.

What organisers say

Molise Moloi, Old Mutual’s Mass and Foundation Cluster Marketing Executive, said the event was designed to reflect the spirit of National Women’s Day by celebrating the courage, resilience and achievements of South African women.

“Lira’s inspiring journey of hope and determination, combined with Nomfundo Moh’s powerful storytelling and contemporary voice, perfectly captures the significance of the day,” Moloi said.

He added that marking 70 years since the historic Women’s March makes this year’s celebration especially meaningful, and organisers expect families and music lovers from across the region to attend.

Venue and atmosphere

The Durban Botanic Gardens, Africa’s oldest surviving botanical garden, provides a picturesque outdoor setting that has long hosted concerts blending nature, music and community. The relaxed, family-friendly environment is expected to draw a diverse audience for an afternoon of live entertainment and reflection.
