Musixmatch has acquired Music Reports, owner of the Songdex music rights registry, as it expands its copyright data and royalty management capabilities.
The deal is the TPG-backed company’s first acquisition in its nearly 17-year history. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Financing and integration
Tikehau Capital provided financing for the acquisition after securing senior financing to support Musixmatch in 2024.
The Bologna-based buyer said the transaction supports its ambition to build a comprehensive music copyright registry and address the industry’s black box of royalties whose recipients cannot be identified.
Musixmatch said Songdex would retain its independence and impartial approach to identifying song ownership as it becomes part of the broader business.
The expansion also includes:
- Blokur, a licensing and data platform that has been part of Music Reports since early 2024.
- Cuetrak‘s software.
Identifying ownership and payments
Musixmatch founder and CEO Max Ciociola said the pace of music creation and use was outstripping the industry’s ability to track it, with artificial intelligence (AI) accelerating that trend.
He said failures to identify songwriters, owners and payment recipients hurt creators. The acquisition, he added, brings the two companies’ datasets together on one platform.
“Our goal is simple. Every use of music identified, every owner known, every creator paid,” Ciociola said.
Copyright detection and human oversight
Musixmatch, which partners with Suno, also described rapid growth in its Pro subscription over the past year and highlighted the March launch of Sentinel.
Sentinel provides real-time music copyright detection for AI and user-generated content platforms. Musixmatch said the acquisition would support its development of agentic royalty management.
The company said models could propose matches, while verified data and catalog records would determine their validity. Reproducible systems would calculate payments, with industry professionals retaining control over unresolved questions.
