Sony Music has submitted more than 260,000 takedown requests for artificial intelligence (AI)-generated deepfakes of its copyrighted music by the end of September. The label had filed 135,000 requests by March, and has since added more than 260,000 additional requests.

Deepfakes impersonating artists including Adele and Harry Styles have been marked as fraudulent.

Licensing and industry alliances

  • Sony Music is the only music company to have joined the Alliance for Responsible Innovation in the Arts & Media (ARIAM).
  • Sony is also the only major label that has not signed an AI licensing deal with a currently active AI music generator such as ElevenLabs or Suno.
  • Sony has signed a licensing deal with Klay, but that product has not yet launched publicly.
  • Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group have also signed with Klay.

Label response

Sony said:

“We will keep enforcing our artists’ rights and expect platforms to act quickly to prevent the same content from reappearing. But it’s becoming an uphill struggle.”
