Spotify has introduced Spotify Technology, a brand bringing together its enterprise software tools and future products. The launch formalises its expansion into selling technology developed internally, building on existing agreements for products such as Confidence.

The company described the expansion as an initial step toward “becoming the R&D operating system,” referring to research and development.

A single brand for software products

Tyson Singer, senior vice president of technology and platform, said selling Spotify’s internally developed technology was an established activity. The change, he explained, was the identity under which those products would operate.

“What’s new is the identity,” indicated Singer. “Spotify Technology brings these tools and future products under one brand because they work best as one system, and because we’re doubling down on this rather than dabbling in it.”

Executives presented the launch as an outcome of internal product development and the broader growth of AI (artificial intelligence). They have also been emphasising AI’s role behind the scenes.

Portal and Confidence

The offerings address system management and software development decisions:

  • Portal catalogues systems, governs ownership and manages the context needed for development.
  • Spotify Confidence enables clients to run experiments, manage feature flags and use their data warehouse to inform development decisions. It uses a credit-based subscription model.

Singer said the company develops confidence in its products before making them available externally.

“And so that gives us the confidence to go forward. And it gives me a lot of confidence that three years from today, I’m not really going to have very many regrets around what we’ve done and why we’ve done it.”
