Nigerian musicians Timaya and Duncan Mighty have released a new single, Kontrol, that merges the highlife and dancehall sounds of the country’s South-South region. The track foregrounds emotional vulnerability and reciprocal love, bringing together two artists whose careers are deeply rooted in the Niger Delta.
South-South Musical Lineage
Timaya, born Inetimi Alfred Odon in Port Harcourt and raised in Bayelsa, broke through in 2005 with Dem Mama, a song chronicling the Odi massacre. Duncan Mighty, born Duncan Wene Mighty Okechukwu in Obio-Akpor, Rivers State, earned the title “Port Harcourt’s First Son” by anchoring his music in highlife and singing in his native Ikwerre language while remaining based in his home city.
The collaboration draws on a shared sonic ecosystem. Bright guitar melodies and percussive patterns carry the DNA of Port Harcourt’s highlife tradition and Bayelsa’s dancehall inflections, highlighting regional sounds that predate the global rise of Lagos-centred Afrobeats.

Kontrol departs from common themes in Nigerian pop where male artists often frame romance through material provision. Timaya sings,
You have taken control of my heart and mind,
emphasising emotional surrender over financial promises. Duncan Mighty’s vocal delivery, shaped by highlife’s tradition of expressing full emotional range, reinforces this shift.
