South African singer-songwriter Makhanj has released her debut album Transkei, a project exploring identity, heritage, and womanhood.
Named after the historic region Transkei that shaped her family’s history, the album serves as a tribute to home and a reflection on memory, belonging, and personal growth. Across its tracks, Makhanj combines soulful melodies with contemporary African influences to address resilience, healing, love, and self-discovery.
The visual identity was developed by an all-women team. Multidisciplinary artist Tony Gum handled creative direction, while photographer Nondumiso Msimanga captured imagery that extends the album’s storytelling. Makhanj said working with women who shared similar experiences made every creative decision more meaningful, resulting in a cohesive project where music and visuals celebrate cultural pride and feminine perspectives.
The album follows previously released singles and establishes Makhanj as a new voice in South Africa’s music scene, showcasing her growth as a songwriter and performer.
