Bella Shmurda, whose earlier work on tracks like “Vision 2020,” “Cash App” and “Holy Jah” frequently addressed survival and ambition, releases “Happy Song” today (14 August). The groove-driven single shifts focus to gratitude and peace of mind, as the Nigerian artist also expands his role as a label builder with Dangbana Republik.
On “Happy Song,” Shmurda reflects: “I’m so happy, my life is a blessing. A million dreams, one person. I’m so lucky.” The record channels a playful, charismatic side that has become more visible in his recent interviews and social media presence.
Dangbana Republik’s Expanding Infrastructure
Shmurda co-founded Dangbana Republik in 2020 with Maybreed, Sanmi Falade and Seun “Pumping” Orekoya. The organisation has evolved from an ecosystem around the artist into a multi-functional label with dedicated management, legal and business affairs, A&R, and artist development arms.
Maybreed, who distributed Shmurda’s early records, now oversees the label’s operational infrastructure. Falade, an entertainment lawyer, handles intellectual property, music rights, recording and publishing agreements, and commercial opportunities. Orekoya leads A&R and artist development.
FOLA’s Chart Success
The label’s ambitions are reflected in the rise of FOLA, who joined Dangbana Republik in 2024. His catalogue includes collaborations with Zlatan, Kizz Daniel, BNXN, and Wizkid (on DJ Tunez’s “One Condition”).
- “Get Better” with Zlatan reached No. 2 on the TurnTable Top 100.
- “Very Soon” with BNXN and “Lost” with Kizz Daniel both charted in the UK and on Billboard’s US Afrobeats chart.
- “Paparazzi” with Shoday hit No. 1 on Nigeria’s Official Top 100 in January 2026.
Speaking to Naija 102.7 FM in October 2025, Shmurda explained the decision to sign FOLA: “One day, I just decided with my team that it was time to support this boy in our own way. And to God be the glory, that little support turned into something big.”
Fatherhood and a New Perspective
Shmurda’s outlook has also been shaped by becoming a father. In a 2024 WeTalk Sound documentary, he said: “I think fatherhood inspired me. What’s in my head is ‘Wetin’ this boy go see in the next 10 years?’ I don’t want him to see my old videos; I want him to see the new Bella who is still doing things.” He added that he wanted his son to see him on television and say, “That’s my daddy.”
“Happy Song” marks a moment where Shmurda can acknowledge life after the struggle, while Dangbana Republik continues to develop new artists and expand its footprint.
