Nigerian music video director TG Omori has detailed his creative evolution and the technological shifts reshaping the visual side of the industry in a new podcast appearance.
Speaking with host Joey Akan on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Omori traced his path from directing out of necessity to intentionally building a body of work designed to outlast him. He also addressed the health crisis that forced him to rediscover his craft, the evolution of Nigerian music videos, and the dual threat and opportunity posed by artificial intelligence.
Omori’s catalog includes numerous cultural landmarks:
- Naira Marley, “Soapy”
- Olamide and Wizkid, “Totori”
- Kizz Daniel and Tekno, “Buga”
- Fireboy DML and Asake, “Bandana”
- The entire visual world of Asake‘s breakthrough album Mr. Money with the Vibe
Omori described a pivotal mindset shift in which money ceased to be the primary driver of his work. He now focuses on creating visual identities that will endure, a decision he says transformed his approach to directing. The director also opened up about a serious health scare that forced him to step back and re-evaluate his relationship with the craft, leading to a deeper understanding of his artistic responsibilities.
On the technological front, Omori weighed in on the rise of visualizers as a format and the impact of artificial intelligence on music video production. He noted that today’s directors operate in a completely different environment, where AI presents both significant challenges and new creative possibilities.
