PPL has distributed £49.0 million to more than 25,500 performers and recording rightsholders. The payment combines UK monies with international revenues collected from 53 collective management organisations (CMOs) worldwide.
International royalty payments
The countries contributing the largest performer payments and substantial recording rightsholder payments this quarter were:
- Performers: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and the USA.
- Recording rightsholders: France, Denmark, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain and the USA.
The distribution also includes revenues from Latin America, including El Salvador, Guatemala and Paraguay.
Performers received a substantial payment from Italian CMO Nuovo Imaie after a long-running dispute between publishers and labels was resolved. It concerned private copying revenues generated by airplay between 2009 and 2019.
Recording rightsholders also received their first payments from Panorama, formerly SOPROQ, which is one of Canada’s two rightsholder CMOs.
PPL improved its repertoire declaration systems as part of efforts to make international data exchange more efficient. The changes contributed particularly to faster pay-through rates from SCPP in France.
Music video licensing revenues
This quarter’s payment includes more than £2.1 million in royalties from licensing music videos for television broadcasts and public playback. These revenues are distributed through PPL’s sister company, VPL.
The music video revenues relate to use on MTV channels across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
